There is a Jackson Heights beautification facebook group that I
started following around the beginning of the semester and it I find it cool to be
constantly updated on community events. For example, I did not know Jackson
Heights had its own farmer's market. It is called J.H. Scraps and sets up
weekend mornings. I am going to have to go check it out because apparently they
bring apple pie to die for. Also, they announce a bunch of community service days that I think I
want to take part in. They fix up garden areas all over Jackson Heights and
clean the streets and parks… it's really neat. Last week I saw that they were going to
fix up a rooftop garden! I don’t know why that makes me excited. In fact I
don’t think I know what rooftop gardens are good for. All I can think about is
how my room has always been next to our garden so the humidity of the dirt
seeps in through the wall which results in my mold allergy. Every time it rains I
can hardly sleep in my own room. I get watery eyes and a runny nose. This confuses me because I know that I certainly would not like to live in the top floor of these buildings.
Since, I couldn’t see how these gardens can be helpful I did a little
bit of research and came across this wonderful article that shows green roofs
all over the world and they look like they were taken out of a science fiction movie and that makes me want to move into one of these places! I learned that
these roofs filter rainwater, increase agricultural space, and provide
insulation for energy efficiency. That's really awesome and I love that Jackson
Heights is turning green. I definitely want to help plant trees and clean parks. I will... as soon as the semester finishes.
