By the way, for any of you wondering or confused at the notion that my turtle "walked away", as in had the freedom to do so in terms of space: Sammy outgrew her tank several years ago, so we kind of let her roam freely around the house. She hybernates in the winter under the couch on top of the base of the lamp where its warm, or in the closet under a pile of shoes. In the spring and summer she just walks all over the house. She's gotten into this habit of staring at the front and back doors of the house, just watching like a guard dog (wouldn't that be a sight for Darwin to see).
